TROOP NEWS: Week of 10/28/12

YES, there WILL be a Girl Scout meeting this Wednesday, October 31st.
It has been brought to my attention that many other activities have been cancelled in light of it being Halloween.  I am aware of that, and understand the desire to get home early.  However, October 31st is also the birthday of Girl Scouts' Founder, Juliette Gordon Lowe.  We will be taking this opportunity to celebrate her birthday in true Girl Scout fashion.  We will sing Happy Birthday, as well as several Girl Scout songs.  We will try on our new Troop T-shirts, and take a group photo.  We will discuss our upcoming service projects and make plans for November activities.  I hope you can appreciate our mission and understand the importance of attendance this week.  <3

1.  Leader & Snack for this week: Madi Hope.  Remember to be able to explain why the snack is a healthy one, and earn Step #1 of the Cooking Snacks badge!

2.  T-shirts:  The girls tie-dyed last week and the shirts came out GREAT!  They will bring them home this week.  Now that EVERYONE will have at least one Girl Scout shirt, let's try to remember to wear Girl Scout attire for meetings and events- to make ourselves easily identifiable.  :)

3.  Shoebox project:  Each girl should be working to fill a shoebox with small gifts for a girl their age.  If filling a box on her own is going to be too much, we can partner up.  There is also a required $7 donation to accompany each box, for processing, shipping.  I have several shoe boxes, but feel free to use your own if you have one.  Boxes will be due at our 11/14 meeting.  Please visit this link for details.  WEBSITE

4.  Interfaith Hospitality Network meal project:  Our meeting on 11/14/12 will be held at the Hope's residence (on McDaniel Mill, directions will be given out at the meeting prior).  Girls will need to be picked up at school (or follow their usual dismissal procedure) and have transportation to the meeting.  Please let me know if this will be an issue.  We will be making Taco Soup to take to the church.  At this week's meeting (on 10/31) the girls will sign up for a can(s) to bring to this meeting- all of the cans together will create the soup.  There is a possibility of us staying to eat with the families at the church- we are just waiting on a few answers.  Please let me know if you/ your girl/ your family would like to attend, and if so how many- we will need to prepare the proper amount of soup!  :)  Please see this link if you'd like to know more about the program.  WEBSITE

5.  Girlapalooza is next Sunday, November 4th!  This has snuck up on me, and I assume the rest of you as well.  We only made enough through our fall fundraiser to cover ONE ticket, so if no one objects, I think we'll leave that money in the bank for now.  If you are interested in attending Girlapalooza at Six-Flags next Sunday, please let me know!!  Check out the WEBSITE for details.

6.  November-December events: We did not schedule an official November event, because we were under the assumption that the Gingerbread House Contest would be held again this year.  Well, I heard this week that it will not be happening this year- so at the moment, there is no official November event.  See events that we could attend below, and let me know if you/your girl(s) would be interested in attending any of them. :)

TROOP NEWS: Week of 10/21/12

1. Snack & Leader for the week:   Amelia!
Remember- be ready to explain what makes it a healthy snack and you earn step of your "Cook: Snacks" badge! :)
2. For the meeting this week: Girls need their notebooks, should wear Girl Scout gear if they have it, and should be ready for a messy craft project.  If you are able to contribute $2 for the troop t-shirts (that is this week's project), it would be greatly appreciated.  There will be an oral quiz on the Girl Scout Promise and Law on October 31st.  Girls should be practicing!   Daisies who can recite the promise from memory will earn their Daisy center.  :)

3.  Any ideas for what the girls can make for the dinner we will take to the Family Promise families on November 14th?  Again, we want it to be something  affordable that the girls can do primarily on their own, with minimal adult interference...  We will be serving 3-4 families.  Any and all suggestions would be helpful.

4.  Events this week:  Tuesday the 23rd is Girl Scout Skate Night at Romp N' Roll in Conyers.  $5 includes admission, skate rental, and use of play structure.   All proceeds go to Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.  (Abby and I may not be at this event, but you are encouraged to attend if you are can!)

I hope everyone had a wonderful break!

1.  Snack & Leader for the week: Carmina
Remember- be ready to explain what makes it a healthy snack and you earn step of your "Cook: Snacks" badge!  :)

2.  For the meeting this week: Girls need their notebooks, should wear Girl Scout gear if they have it, and should bring empty TP rolls if you have them.

3.  If you have fundraiser orders/ money/ address books that have not been turned in- everything is entered and will be finalized as soon as I get confirmation from everyone that there's nothing left to turn in.  ;o)  Please let me know one way or the other.

4.  Event for next weekend: We've scheduled a group trip to Corn Dawgs on Saturday.  Cost will be $11 per person (provided we have at least 15 people attend, regular admission is $12).  Please let me know how many will attend in your party.  We will meet outside the front gate of Corn Dawgs at 11:00AM.  To get the group discount, we must arrive/enter together.

5.  Badges & Petals: Who's working on Brownie Badges and Daisy Petals?  We will be working on some during meetings as well, but make sure to let me know when you complete an activity (even just one "step"!) so we can mark it off in the log book!  :o) A few girls asked to borrow badge books over break- remember, you can always borrow a book- please just return it!

6.  Service:  We will talk about our Operation Christmas Child project this week.  Just a reminder- each girl will fill a shoebox with items for a needy child.  Click here for a list of items to include.

7.  Upcoming meetings:
10/24:  Leader/Snack is Amelia.  The girls will make troop t-shirts.  The girls will each need cardboard (flattened, empty cereal box- or something similar- should work).  We will be buying t-shirts from WalMart.  If you could send $3 for the shirt, it would be greatly appreciated (dues are still covering fees, badges, etc- no surplus yet!).

10/31: Leader/Snack is Madi.  Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31st, so we will celebrate her birthday at our meeting that day.  Madi- let's see if we can come up with a festive AND healthy birthday snack.  :)

Meeting 10/03/2012: Recycling Craft & Girl Scout Bingo!

This week, the girls broke into two groups.  (Big thanks to Ms. Collinsworth & Mrs. Leigh for leading the Bingo group!)  One group used empty toilet paper rolls and leftover cupcake liners to make cute little Owls! The other group practiced their Girl Scout trivia by playing Bingo with facts and symbols.  Next week (10/17) they will switch activities... and the following week (10/24) will be T-SHIRT week!  :)

TROOP NEWS: Week of 10/01/12

1.       Thank you to all who came out for the Fall Kick-Off/ Investiture Ceremony last night.  I hope you enjoyed the ceremony and dinner.  J  I posted a photo of the girls on our website- it’s the only one I took, but it’s not great.  If you took pictures, would you mind sharing (by email, text, link, or hard copy- whatever’s easiest)?
We definitely had the best turn out of any troop, which is awesome!

2.       Snack this week:  Emma (Don’t forget- healthy snack to serve 15 girls, must be able to explain what makes it healthy)

3.       This week we will do an craft activity that requires toilet paper rolls.  Ideally, each girl will need one.  If you could save rolls between now and then and send what you have, that would be great!

4.       The girls discussed this last week:  Instead of worrying about formal uniforms at school, it would be nice if girls wore “girl scout t-shirts” on meeting days.  The older girls should all have at least one or two (earned from cookie sales?  ones we made last year?).  We will make our troop shirts this year, I believe the week we’re back from fall break.  (Shirts can also be bought from girlscoutshop.com – I’ve also gotten Abby one on eBay and one from Goodwill!)

5.       Next Calendar Activity is CornDawgs on Saturday, October 20th.  I will let you know when I have a chance to call about the group rate.

6.       FUNDRAISING PACKETS & ADDRESS BOOKLETS DUE BACK THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3RD.  Please don’t forget!  J

09.30.12 Cherry Blossom Service Unit Investiture 2012

We had an excellent turn out at the Fall Kick Off and Investiture ceremony.
The girls rededicated themselves to living by the Girl Scout Promise and Law,
and families enjoyed fellowship and -of course- spaghetti.  :)
Thank you to all who attended.

TROOP NEWS: Week of 09/23/12

Sending out the update a day early.  Hope that doesn't throw anyone off!  LOL

Happy Fall!!   Sorry this is long- there are several important items this week. Please pay special attention to #4 and let me know if you are able to help.  :)

1.  SNACK/ LEADER for this week: Lesley: Don't forget- healthy snack to serve 15 girls, be ready to explain what makes it healthy, no drinks necessary.

2.  PLEASE REGISTER YOUR GIRL IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO!

3.  FUNDRAISER:  Remember, fundraiser packets are due 10/05 (one week from Wednesday).  I need every girl to complete the address cards- this is quick and easy, so no excuses.  :)  Please try to sell items/ magazine subscriptions if you can.  :)

4.  NOTEBOOKS:  Please make sure to check and sign your girl's Troop Notebook each week and help her remember to bring it to school on Wednesdays.  There hasn't been anything important communicated in there yet, but there will be as we get busier!

5.  UNIFORMS:  The girls and I discussed uniforms this week.  It is expected that each girl have the most basic uniform pieces.  For Daisies, that is a blue smock.  For Brownies, it will be a brown vest or sash.  Most of the patches on the front of these uniform pieces are bought, including the Flag, the Council Identification Set, and Troop Numerals. HOW A DAISY SMOCK SHOULD LOOK.  HOW A BROWNIE VEST SHOULD LOOK.   PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you have a) an insignia tab (yellow for Daisies/ brown for Brownies), b) World Trefoil Pin (same for all), or c) Membership Pin (daisy and brownie- specific).  The troop will get these for any girl who does not yet have them.  They will be presented at the Rededication on Sunday 09/30.
Our troop does not require additional uniform pieces, though they are available for purchase.  Our general rule is white shirt and khakis (usually), white shirt and denim (outside events), or Troop T-shirt & "dress for the weather" (outdoor/ active events).  We also discussed wearing Girl Scout or Troop t-shirts on meeting days (Wednesdays). We will be making troop t-shirts soon!  :)  All Girl Scout uniforms/ patches/ pins/ books can be bought online, at the Girl Scout Shops in Griffin or Mableton (those are the closest ones), or at SCHOOL BOX (usually the most convenient option).  Online and Scout Shops have more selection, and lots of extra items, but SB should have all that you need.  :)

6.  BROWNIES: Are you working on your Badges?  Remember, some of the activities are quick and easy!  :)  Step by step directions are available in the Brownie's Guide to Girl Scouting. Here are a few that Abby is working on this weekend:
  • Home Scientist: Step One: Be a Kitchen Chemist- Make a) Oil & Vinegar salad dressing; b) homemade ice cream (not in a machine); or c) grow rock candy.
  • Inventor: Step One: Warm Up your Inventor's Mind- a) Think of 5 new uses for a box; b) take 5 minutes to draw as many simple things as you can that begin with a circle; or c) fine 5 new ways to use a tool or play with a toy.
Step Two: Find Lots of Ways to Solve the Same Problem- Think of 10 unusual ways to a) make music; b) carry your lunch; or c) water plants
DAISIES: Think of things you can do to demonstrate each of the points of the Girl Scout Law.  And make sure you're practicing your Girl Scout Promise!  :)

7. REDEDICATION SUNDAY 09/30 @ 3pm
  • Cost is $10 per family plus one item (either a bottle of salad dressing or a 2 liter of clear beverage).  I'm sorry if I misspoke before, I've been corrected.
  • 2 adults from each troop are needed to arrive at 1pm to help set up and decorate.
I cannot do this- I'll have Alex and Chas is working, so I would not be much help.
  • 3 adults from each troop are needed to stay after and help tear down and clean up.
  • Volunteers are needed to help cook.
  • Girls should wear white tops, khaki bottoms, and smock/sash/vest :)  We'll plan to take a group photo.  :)
  • Please let me know if you will be attending (and how many) and bring your payment/ items on Wednesday.  This will be a special event for the girls, please try to attend.  :)
8.  I know we decided not to put it on the official calendar, but Saturday the 29th is Girl Scout Day at Zoo Atlanta, and Abby and I (and Alex) will be going.  If you'd like to join us, please let me know!  :)
